How we work

  1. 6/60We test slowly
  2. 6/36and explain what we see,
  3. 6/24then fit frames that suit the face
  4. 6/18and the prescription, not the other way round.
  5. 6/12No commission on lenses. No rush at the chair. Thirty-nine years on one street.

Eye exams

Every appointment is with a qualified optometrist, in a quiet room, with time left over for questions.

The eye exam, step by step

Forty-five minutes, nothing skipped

  1. 01

    History

Ten minutes of talk first: screens, headaches, driving at night, what your parents wore.

  2. 02

    Refraction

One lens at a time, better or worse. We tell you the numbers and what they mean.

  3. 03

    Eye health

Pressure, the lens and the retina. An OCT image if anything needs a second look.

  4. 04

    Frames

Chosen for the prescription first. Strong lenses want a smaller eye, high ones a certain bridge.

  5. 05

    Fitting

Ready in about a week. We set the arms and nose pads by hand and check the centres.

The first optician who told me what the numbers meant. I left with older frames re-glazed instead of new ones I did not need.
